APA Food Annual Business Meeting May 20th

Our Annual Membership meeting is coming up on May 20th from 6pm Eastern/5pm Central/4pm Mountain/3pm Pacific. This will be our Annual business meeting that would usually occur during during the National Planning Conference. We are moving it up a week from our usual 4th Thursday date to miss the long Memorial Day weekend and so those who want to attend all sessions of the virtual NPC are able to fully participate. This is your chance to learn more about the Division, hear about our work plan and budget priorities, and meeting others engaged in food systems planning.

Call for Student Papers

The Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society (AFHVS) invites submissions from undergraduate and graduate students to the 2021 AFHVS Student Research Paper Awards. The papers can come from students in a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and should be on some topic of relevance to the Society’s focus. See more details in the full Call for Papers.

Winners will be invited/expected to present their paper at the June 2021 virtual conference co-hosted by:

  • The Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS)
  • Agriculture Food & Human Values Society (AFHVS)
  • Canadian Association for Food Studies (CAFS)
  • Society for the Anthropology of Food & Nutrition (SAFN)

Each award also includes:

  • The opportunity to present at the 2021 virtual conference;
  • Free registration to the 2021 virtual conference (seeCall for Abstracts);
  • A two-year membership in the Society;
  • $300 cash prize (not available to students that are not U.S. citizens, due to IRS restrictions).

The committee may also choose to award honorable mentions, which do not include the monetary items.

New Resources for Learning about Shared Kitchens and Food Business Incubators

Shared-use commercial kitchens, kitchen incubators, and other food business programs build entrepreneurial opportunities in local food systems by providing affordable commercial kitchen space. These for-profit and nonprofit facilities have been sprouting up around the country in response to the growing market for local, artisan foods. Exciting new business models are emerging and many planners are eager to learn more about them and the regulatory questions they raise. We would like to highlight a couple new resources that may be beneficial to APA members interested in the topic:

NICK Summit is an upcoming gathering of some of the nation’s leading shared kitchens and business incubators that will explore successful incubation programs and kitchen management strategies. The day-long Summit by the Network for Incubator and Commissary Kitchens will be held on October 10, 2018, at The Good Acre in Falcon Heights, MN. The day will include a keynote on kitchen innovations, a panel of impact-driven programs, exciting quick fire sessions, and opportunities to discuss sticky kitchen management issues with peers and experts in the industry. This inaugural event is a collaboration of The Food Corridor, Grow North, The Wallace Center, The Good Acre, and Fruition Planning & Management. Attendees can also take advantage of exciting events at The Inaugural Food | Ag | Ideas Week and Twin Cities Startup Week.

A new reference guide, the Shared Kitchen Toolkit: A Practical Guide to Planning, Launching and Managing a Shared Use Commercial Kitchen, was published earlier this year by The Food Corridor in partnership with Purdue University Extension, with funding from the USDA North Central SARE. This comprehensive resource provides guidance on definitions, business models, funding sources, planning considerations, and daily operations. The Toolkit is available as a free downloadable PDF or wiki.

APA National Planning Conference 2018

APA has officially opened their proposal submission portal to collect conference session proposals for the 2018 National Planning Conference in New Orleans this April 21-24. The deadline to submit proposals is August 29th.  Proposal guidelines and submission instructions can be found here.

Sessions Due: APA National Planning Conference – New York City 2017

The next APA National Planning Conference will take place May 6-9, 2017 in New York City. APA-FIG is busy planning some unique sessions and networking events!

If you haven’t already, consider submitting a food systems planning related session proposal. Because of its location, this conference should draw a big crowd, and we would love to see a robust number of food systems planning sessions in the program. The deadline for proposal submissions is August 25, 2016.

If you need some inspiration, consider some of these session ideas:

  • Role of technology in food systems planning
  • Role of local food businesses in the local creative economy
  • Planning for food waste and its impact on sustainability goals
  • Role of the planner in food policy councils
  • Using Collective Impact for food systems planning and implementation
  • Role of state and regional planning efforts for local food systems
